The Challenge
Edinburgh Airport’s Airspace Change Programme aims to modernize airspace under the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) CAP1616 framework. The challenge is to balance increasing air traffic demand with environmental concerns while transitioning to Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) routes. Edinburgh’s airspace is particularly complex due to interactions with Glasgow’s airspace, military operations and the need to minimize noise impact on local communities. Ensuring stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance adds another layer of complexity.
Our Approach
To70 is supporting Edinburgh Airport by first reviewing the existing operational criteria and strategic policy objectives. It has developed route design options that align with the Statement of Need and design principles, including RNAV Standard Instrument Departure (SID) designs conforming to ICAO and UK CAA standards. Additionally, To70 has prepared a CAA SARG approval submission for a flyability validation plan, including desktop assessments. To70 continues to assist Edinburgh Airport through statutory consultation and validation, ensuring transparency and engagement with stakeholders, including the public.
